Opal

Opal is a beautiful gem believed to be formed from rain. There are some different opinions on how exactly this precious gem forms, but many believe its formation happens when water from rain gets in to crevasses in the rock. Once the water evaporates, the silica that is left behind dries out and hardens into precious opal.
Opallios is the Greek word for Opals meaning to see a change of color. The Roman word for Opal is Opalus meaning precious stone. The opal is known as the Queen Of Gems because it has all the colors of the other gemstones.

Opal is a multi-colored gem prized for the iridescent color flashes it displays when viewed from different angles.  These flashes of color, known as "opalescence," determine the value of an opal.  Opals which demonstrate this "play of color" are referred to as precious opals.  Opals with little or no play of color are called common opals.
